Viper HST 4-16X44 SFP Riflescope - VMR-1 (MOA) (VHS-4309)
Tree stands to mountain tops, bolt guns to rifles, the Viper HST is ideal for a wide range of shooting applications. Blending many of the best features from Vortex's incredibly popular Viper PST and Viper HS riflescopes, the Viper HST (Hunting Shooting Tactical) riflescope is built on an ultra-strong 30mm one-piece machined aluminum tube to deliver increased windage and elevation travel and optimal adjustment. An advanced optical system highlighted with a 4x zoom range provides magnification versatility. A forgiving eye box with increased eye relief gets shooters on target quickly and easily. Incredibly precise, repeatable and durable tactical windage and elevation turrets built specifically for dialing, along with its hashmark-based reticle, top off this highly versatile riflescope’s long-range performance features.
Dual use for Shooting Tactical / Hunting.
VMR-1 MOA Reticle
- The VMR-1 reticle is highly effective when used for wind and moving target leads. This hashmark-based second focal plane reticle is perfect for accurate holds at extended ranges.
- Second focal plane (SFP) reticles are located near the scope’s eyepiece behind the image erecting and magnifying lenses. This style of reticle does not visually change in size when you change the magnification. The advantage of an SFP reticle is that it always maintains the same appearance. Listed reticle subtensions used for estimating range, holdover, and wind drift correction are only accurate at one particular magnification.

First and foremost, the glass is exceptional. I've only been out to a 500m range with it so far, but the 12" target at 500 was crystal clear (aside from some heat waves, of course). A shooter in the lane next to mine fired while I was lining-up my shot, and I could see his bullet wake.
The reticle is crisp, clear, and seems to be very accurate. With the rifle zeroed at 200m, I fired a holdover shot out to 500m to test this, and was right on target. Having the fiber-optic indicator for 18x (where the subtensions are set to be accurate) is a nice touch. This is my first second focal plane reticle, so I'm still getting used to that, but it's a nice option for long-range since a first focal plane reticle might easily cover your entire target from view.
The turrets are well constructed with clearly visible markings. Adjustments are easy to make and the CRS zero stop is very helpful. I have mine zeroed at 200m, then adjust it for 300/400/500+. That zero stop makes it absolutely simple to get back down to the 200m zero accurately every time without having to write down your zero elevation... or remember it. Something I notice every time I make an adjustment is that the grooves on the turrets are milled sharp. It doesn't take a lot of effort to turn the turrets, so it's not like you'll cut yourself on them, but personally I think they should have been smoothed a bit.
One thing to note about the turrets is that there is only 65 MOA of travel. This really is not an issue if you'll be hunting or target shooting out to 200-300m (or yards), but to go any further than that you'll need at least a 20 MOA offset (rings or base). I'm currently using a 20 MOA mount and I have plenty of elevation to go to 500m and beyond (doubtful it will adjust out to 800 or 1000, though, without another 20 MOA). This really isn't a negative for this scope... most every scope out there is going to need a 20 MOA (or larger) rings/base for long-range shooting.
The finish on the scope is like any other Vortex scope -very nice, and very durable. This particular scope doesn't take any kind of beating, but my other Vortex scopes most certainly do and I can say that the finish is outstanding. The Vortex scope on my hunting rifle has been laid down on rocks, bumped against every kind of tree/branch you can imagine, and been splashed with mud numerous times and it still looks brand new. The Vortex scope on my AR-15 has been bumped and banged more times than I like to admit, and it still looks perfect too. Side note: I've never had either of these scopes go off zero due to being bumped around, either.
Lastly, but not least of all... Vortex customer service is beyond amazing. I broke one of the flip-up caps that came with my Strike Eagle and called to get a new one. They were very helpful and friendly, and sent me a new cap right away... and wouldn't even let me pay for it, even after I told them it was my own fault it broke and was more than willing to pay.

I installed the scope on a Savage Mark II TRR-SR using an EGW 20 MOA rail and Warne rings. I wanted a combination of parallax adjustment and Milrad. There are two fine focus knobs for clarity: the reticle and the distance adjustment. This is a second focal plane scope, meaning that the reticle does not change in size when you operate the zoom.
Using a laser boresighter, I zeroed the scope on paper in 2 shots at 50 yards. Adjustment with elevation and windage was easy. The clicks are tactile and audible. A notch shows how much you have turned the knobs. Shims are provided so that you can lock in zero.
Attaching the lens covers do tend to adjust the reticle, however. There is no way to lock it. Your focus knob allows you to see your objects clearly, at the intended target distance. It also removes parallax error,
The matte black finish minimizes glare. The knurled knobs are comfortable to adjust. The sun shade is pretty substantial.
Quality of the glass is excellent. The warranty is a lifetime warranty and it is transferable to subsequent owners without hassles.
Great scope.
Highly recommend.
