Basic Adjustments
Adjusting the Pan Head
The Pro GT features a 3-way pan head that allows you to quickly follow the action and easily adjust your viewing angle. For camera use, this head allows you to choose between horizontal and vertical plate alignments.
Pan and Tilt Action
You can control all of the pan and tilt action with just one hand. To make any horizontal or vertical adjustments, twist the handle counter-clockwise to free the pan head’s movement. When in desired position, twist handle clockwise to lock.
Attaching Optics to the Tripod
- Flip the plate lever lock outward to the free position and remove the quick-release plate.
- Attach the plate to your optic or camera. Be sure to tighten the tripod mount bolt from the bottom side of the plate and flip the D ring so it lies flat.
- Place the quick-release plate back into the plate holder. Flip the plate lever fully back to the lock position so the quick-release plate rests securely in the holder.
Adjusting the Tripod Legs
Center Column
Loosen the center column height adjustment knob to change the relative height of the tripod head. To help stabilize the tripod in windy conditions, hang a weight from the balance hook.
Leg Length
Each tripod leg extends to a maximum of three sections. To adjust the length of a leg section, flip the leg lever up to unlock. Slide the leg section out to the desired length and flip the leg lever back down to lock in place.

Regardless, I wasn't really sure how much I needed to spend to support my spotting scope - so I got on Amazon and purchased the Vortex Optics Pro GT and the Swarovski Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod .
When they both arrived, I was surprised to find the Vortex was a better tripod in pretty much every way:
1) The Vortex is actually lighter than the Swarovski. This was the most surprising part since the Swarovski is a carbon fiber model.
2) The Vortex center pole breaks into a couple of sections - which makes it easy to use the tripod at the shortest height. This also shaves a couple additional ounces off the Vortex if you're concerned with weight.
3) The Vortex is a more stable tripod with the aluminum build. I used them side by side with both a Swarovski ATX 95mm Spotter and a Leupold Mark 4 20-60x80mm Spotter . At best they are the same - but my personal opinion is the Vortex was more stable.
4) The tripod head is the only area where the Swarovski is arguably better. Personally, I prefer the head on the Vortex because it's simpler; but, I do see how some people would prefer the horizontal and vertical locking mechanisms.
5) If these tripods were the exact same price - I would choose the Vortex. That says a lot when considering that the Swarovski is roughly 6 times more expensive...
If you're looking for a rock-solid / lightweight tripod that won't break the bank. I would definitely put this at the absolute top of the list.

One other feature that I am still getting used to is the pan/tilt handle. I previously had two separate locks for pan and tilt, so I could lock the tilt while leaving the pan lock open, allowing me to freely scan left and right. On this tripod, pan and tilt are operated by twisting the handle which locks both. I can see how this could add to the ease of operation, but I'm still getting used to not having these as two separate features. On the plus side, if you twist the handle just enough, you can keep the scope from tilting while still having the lock loose enough that you can still pan without changing your vertical axis.
Overall I'm pleased with the tripod, but if Vortex were to send me a heavier plastic quick-release lever...I would happily switch to that from the stock lever, and this review would then be 5-stars.
This one fit the bill perfectly. It has very smooth operation and is very versatile. I recommend highly.
